The Stillbirth CRE supports several awards and scholarships for both PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Please view internal and external opportunities currently available below.
Clinician-Researcher Fellowship and Discovery Science Fellowship
Through a competitive process, the Stillbirth CRE is offering two fellowships to support early- or mid-career researchers who are <10 years FTE post PhD:
Clinician-Researcher Fellowship
Discovery Science Fellowship
These two fellowships are designed to support exceptional early- and mid-career stillbirth researchers whose projects align with the Stillbirth CRE’s priority areas and make a meaningful contribution to the Stillbirth CRE’s program of work.

Award value: $40,000 each
Each Fellowship is for one year (12 months) from funding commencement
Applications close: Sunday 1 December 2024
Applicants will be notified of the outcomes in early 2025.
Terms and Conditions
If you are awarded this fellowship, you must:
Include your project on the stillbirth research database managed by the Stillbirth CRE and ensure details are maintained up to date.
Provide a short-written report (with a photo) about your project’s key outcomes for use on the Stillbirth CRE website and newsletters (to be provided by 30 November 2025)
Present an update of your project at a Stillbirth CRE event or forum or another relevant event. This may be in-person or online.
Acknowledge the support/contribution of the scholarship provider (Stillbirth CRE) when publishing or presenting material that relates to the research project.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidate must be an early career researcher who is <10 years post PhD (please provide evidence of PhD award and conferral date)
For the Stillbirth CRE Clinician-Researcher Fellowship, applicant must hold current registration/accreditation as clinician (medical, nursing, allied health professional)
Candidate must be residing in Australia at the time of application and award, and hold a current position within an Australian organisation where funds can be transferred to.
Must not hold a fellowship for 2025 (e.g., NHMRC, ARC or Philanthropic)
Fellowship funds should be used for salary support (either applicant or research personnel such as research assistant) and cannot be used to cover equipment purchases, conference attendance, or travel costs.
Selection criteria
Applicants will be assessed across the following criteria:
Career vision in relation to stillbirth prevention and/or stillbirth bereavement care research
Track record in relation to stillbirth prevention and/or stillbirth bereavement care research
Alignment of proposed research with CRE priority areas or potential to lead to new directions in stillbirth research and/or stillbirth bereavement care research.
